Productive Soil

My husband, John, and our family are constantly talking about the current season, coming seasons and what conservation practices will benefit the farm. The New York Times currently has a great article discussing soil-conservation methods and was able to speak to this based on our practices over the years.

“We’ve been working closely with our local NRCS agent to see our continuous cropping pan out. For the past 7 years, we’ve had a 3 acre field in a program designed to reduce our dependence on synthetic fertilizers and weed killers, and to improve soil quality. Last year was the final year of this program. The results are astounding. When we began, the organic matter in the field was 3.1%, and every scientific resource we talked to said that could not be changed in our lifetimes... it’s now over 6%! My grandfather was one of the first to practice no-till cropping in central Kentucky in the mid ‘60’s, and we’ve been doing it ever since. My dad was one of the first to try no-till tobacco in the early 2000’s, and we have continued in this practice 100% ever since. Now we have the prospect of eliminating synthetic fertilizers and weed killers completely, very exciting!”

This is truly great news and it will benefit our CSA in the years to come since this is our method for growing the vegetable, fruit, herb, and flower shares.
